Such a silly question that I've got!

shopunke Sep 11, 2005 01:45 PM

I know a lot about frogs.
I LOVE frogs.
And yet, I've never had one croak before!

Last night my Southern Leopard Frog, Comet, decided to croak for the first time ever. I've had him since June, where I found him as a tadpole in a feeder tank when I was working at a local petsmart. So, I figured, he's too young to be calling for a mate or anything. My question, then, is:

Why did he decide to croak?
Is he happy?
Is he content?
Bored?
Or just to scratch his throat?

Thanks in advance- I'm really curious!

Oh, and also, how long will it take him to reach his full size of about 3 inches? He's not quite an inch long as of now.

I have only experienced Leopard Frogs in the wild. But, they croak all the time here in Florida (when it's warm). When he does mature, he'll be able to jump quite a distance. They swim pretty good too.

You should find a Leopard call online then play it and see if you get a response

I've got one, but I have no way of playing it in my bedroom where his tank is.

He's already an amazing jumper and swimmer- pretty cool!

That's funny, though, I'm from Florida and the only wild one I've ever seen was a squished one on my road.

Still, wonder why he's croaking...

most frogs have a territorial call. your little guy is just saying this is my space, keep out. Breeding calls are usually frequent and LOUD... no matter what species of frog
