Timber rattler color

When do timbers start sshowing thier color phase? I've seen dozens of newborns at dens in the fall & they were all a gray color.Not a hint of their future colors.Only one I've ever raised remained dark gray thru 2 12 years.Thanks

Typically, after their first year, they tend to yellow or black (or brown).

I have one yellow phase that was born in captivity on Labor Day 2000, and it was basically grey until about 18 months of age, then started to turn toward its yellow coloration. There is a pic of it on www.matabuey.com
