Adoption

Hey I have been fascinated by box turtles for some time now. I once had one I captured, but regrettably let her go. Now, I yet again crave for an eastern box turtle, but wish to adopt rather than capture another. Can anybody give me advice on adopting eastern box turtles?

The application process is involved and it will be made sure (via photos, etc.) that you will properly accommodate the animal. Box turtles are not nearly so frequently available for adoption as are many of the common aquatic turtles.

Please don't collect one from the field. These guys are hurting in most areas of their range, and populations don't sustain single specimen losses as graciously as do many other herps. Not only are easterns now protected in many of their range states, personal desire should not be enough to justify collection of a declining species when captive-bred animals can be relatively easy to find at $35-50 each. With that proposition, you could enjoy your pet with peace of mind and you'd even get to watch it grow up.

I must add, be sure to check your state laws as it is illegal to own them in some states.

Another option is to volunteer with local nature centers or wildlife sanctuaries that do with wildlife rehab. work. Sometimes they get injured turtles that if are rehabbed cannot be released but they themselves cannot always find homes for so rather than fix the turtles, usually wind up euthanizing them. If you volunteer with such groups, then they may feel secure enough in your knowledge and care capabilities to allow you to take on the responsibility of providing a home for one of those injured.

Well I'm having difficulty finding box turtles for adoption. I even looked at this site's adoption section and none of the places had any box turtles up for adoption. Can someone please post some links to sites for adopting turtles. Better yet, please send links to the part of the site where they list what they have up for adoption. Thanks in advance, I'd really appreciate some help to find some little chelonian a nice and cozy home.
