My turtle is not eating

leroyntiff Sep 11, 2005 04:35 PM

My turtle was eating pellets, fish, and crickets fine not too long ago. I just bought a uva/uvb light for him and all he does is bask all day long and does not eat. He has a couple of times taken a chunk out of a fish that died, but other than that he wont eat. Not even frozen turtle treats. What should I do? Thannks for any info

it depends on how long he has not been eating. sometimes when they havent had a uv light for a while they will sit under it a LOT once you do get it. if it hasnt been more than a few days dont worry quite yet. if it goes or has gone over a week, worry. if he can tell at all that it is getting cooler, that may be the cause and you can either hibernate him or heat him back up. its also not just temperature, a drop in photoperiod(length of time of light per day) can also help trigger hibernation. if you do want to hibernate go to fishpondinfo.com and look for a page on the subject or just go to the forums and start a thread in the right category and get help there.
