Snake more active?

LNZimmer Sep 11, 2005 05:27 PM

I am a new snake owner. I recently noticed that he is way more active than he used to be. Just curiuous...I changed his habitat a little bit by using aspen shavings, and there are some things he can "climb" on, such as a small box with a hole in it, a rock, and a peice of paper folded into a "tent". More activity is not a bad thing? Or is it? (Sorry if this is a stupid question...)

Thanks for any input!

1st no question is a stupid one

your snake may be more active for one of two reasons or both... when you put new things in a snake's enclosure s/he will explore every inch until all the new stuff is familiar. the 2nd reason is he may be hungry and looking for a way out to find food.

It's often true that after a change to their "room" they are more active. They want to explore, and see what is new. Also, new smells. (Which is why it's best to not use newspaper, it is very stinky to snakes.)

Mine is also more active right after I have handled him. I usually handle for at least 15 minutes before feeding. I feed live, so he gets to stalk and hunt, too.

I was just wondering, since you mentioned live feedings, how early can you feed them live food? I have been using frozen mice. Is it best to only use one or the other? I am not sure how I feel about feeding live mice, because I don't know if I can watch it Mine is still fairly young.
