Hiya

This is Tinkerbell.

I acquired her yesterday at the NARBC show in Anaheim. I was working at a friend's booth and I kept passing these beautiful tegus at LLLReptile whenever I went to get feeders. I couldn't resist (and my friend gave me $30) so the next thing I knew, I was the proud owner of one of them.

Anyways, I've had two tegus in the past, but both for a very short period of time due to school, personal problems, etc.

Hopefully I can keep this one because I've had her for less than 24 hours and I'm already attached.

Anyways she's around 26 inches in length. The guy told me she's around 9 months or so. Haven't weighed her yet, but she's pretty stocky. Yesterday she ate a pinky and two hoppers. Today I put about a dozen 1" crickets in her cage, but she doesn't seem interested. Is she past the insect-eating stage?
How often should I feed her rodents and how many at one feeding? She's VERY temporarily in a 20 gallon long cage. Probably only for a couple more days until I get a bigger cage.

congrats on the new tegu.

but i dontr think they ever really grow out of insects. they will eat them thier whole lives. but i know mine doesnt like crickets. he likes grasshoppers. he will kill the cricket and spit it out lol. so catch some grasshoppers and try those. try to avoid areas where there are a lot of pesticides. My vet actually recommends wild bugs, due to the stomach content and vitamins in thier body. He doesnt see pesticides as a problem though, because in argentina they use pesticedes that we cant even buy here.

Hi Pixie,
Congrats!! I too was at the NARBC yesterday. I was at the LLL booth for a long time because they had the most tegus at the convention... a lot of juvies argentine b&w, 2 or 3 juvie reds and one bigger yearling argentine b&w (which they told me was a female!). I was on the verge of purchasing her as a mate for my male but my senses got to me.
I just got my 3 ft. long male about 3 weeks ago. Getting another one would be too much for me to take care of at the moment. Plus I would have to house them in separate cages due to their size difference until she got bigger.
Anyways, welcome to the forum! I hope you keep your tegu for a long time and she gets really big!
Keep us posted on how she does and don't be afraid to ask questions, there's a lot of helpful people here.

Tristan
P.S. Did you see that big blue tegu at the show? (I'll post pics)

This is Roy

Hi Tristan!

Yeah I got my Tink at LLLReptile. Actually, that yearling you almost purchased was probably the sibling of my tegu, because I had to decide between her and Tinkerbell. In the end I chose Tink because she was a little less squirmy (but still squirmy!)and she had a lot more black than tegu #2.

ALMOST got one of those juvie reds instead though. I just love how they look with the white contrast when they're young.

I must've missed that blue tegu, I was looking around for some adults though, but none to be found.

Anyways, thanks for the welcome and Roy looks like a handsome boy!

i was playing photographer at the convention and snapped a pic of that blue tegu. the seller said it didn't like to be handled otherwise i would have considered bringing it home. kinda expensive though... $275. yeah, the reds were nice but expensive as well!
did you see that alligator? it looked sedated or high or something... it was cool though.

I actually took him home. He is MUCH MORE whiter than your picture shows. I paid $250, which is not bad for how nice he looks. He was kind of small but darn good looking.

Congrats!! You should post some pics. How's his disposition? Is he easy to handle? The guy at the booth told me that he didn't like to be handled much. He sure is nice looking!

He does have attitude!! I should have him calmed down shortly but his looks make up for it.

..I tell you what, I would have gave 500.00 for him...

ruddmic Sep 15, 2005 11:13 AM

I would have done the same. I am hoping he will clean up the ugly orange coloring on my albinos and make some really good looking blues.

They would have purty babies. =)

i tried to take some shots from the front, but the lady told me not to

didja see any little kids sitting on bubba for pictures?

that little boy in the first picture ended up sitting on bubba's back for a photo.

i feared for bubba's sanity.
