help with BT

den23 Sep 11, 2005 09:04 PM

I just aquired a very large Black throat, he seems to have no fear of people and as far as I know he is CB and captive raised, and used to people. He has walked around the room and shows no sign of aggression. I was wondering what things I can do to help his transition and gain his trust.

Thank you,
Dean

Do a search og the forums here! There's a TON of information available if you just take the time to LOOK!

I have looked and saw that people say that BT's do not like to be switched at older ages. Sorry for the post I wanted info not semi sarcastic/rude comments. I have been following this forum for awhile and gathered great info to help me with husbandry, not much on gaining the trust of a large BT.

when first getting a monitor regardless of size I leave him alone. Set them up in the cage and give them time to get used to all the new surroundings. This will reduce any stress the animal might have from entering a new enviroment.

I Wait atleast a few days before I try any interaction other then cage mantainence. I read the monitors behavior and when he seems more comfortable I begin slowly interacting with him. Sometimes this can take a few days sometimes longer. There really is no set time. Its all upto the monitor in question.

Thank you, He came from a very small enclosure 3ft vision. I don't have much experience with monitors, but I couldn't see this guy in such a small enclosure. So Thank you for your time.
And I will take your advice.

Well its good to hear that you want to give him a good home. A 3ft cage is WAY to small for such a big monitor. Thats ridiculous. I hate how people can be so ignorant. Anyways, ya just basically what JPShadow said. Just set up his cage and do not handle him, or have much interaction with him other than cleaning the cage, changing water, ect...After a few days, if you see him warming up to his surroundings, then slowly start interacting with him more and more. I just sit in my blackthroats cage and watch him. Hes very active and fun to watch. I let him roam my backyard all the time, and sometimes my house. But not my house anymore cause he took the biggest crap of a lifetime and it took forever to clean and get rid of the smell. But it was funny now that I look back at it. But ya, beautiful blackthroat you got there. Mine is 49 inches and 10 months old. Blackthroats are my favorite monitor. There very enjoyable. But if you have ANY questions, make sure you ask. What is your setup in your cage and temps and everything?

Did you get that beautiful beast from underground? Still can't understand why he wanted to sell an albig of that size and temperment for so little.

cage temps are about 90-95 basking side and cooler on the other side (no thermometer yet) I'm using dirt as a substrate and gave him a large flat rock for his nails. Need to find a bigger water tub, and branch.

Thank you,
Dean

Well 1st off, are you offering any hides for the monitor? How deep is the dirt you are offering? And your basking temps should be around 130-150'ish...

Yes he has a massive half circle piece of cork bark that he has slept in. I am trying to get the dirt deep enough for him to burrow, right know it's about 4 inches deep. One side of his cage has a 150 watt basking light, that side of the tank stays at about 100-110. In the middle of his tank is the cork bark, and on the cool side 80-85 is his water bin(any suggestions on what to use for a larger water bin, I heard they like to swim) and around his water bin are flat rocks to help trim his nails. He has never shown any signs(that I see) aggression, and I have gone into his cage for daily upkeep.

Thank you,
Dean
