PlasmaLightning Jul 18, 2003 05:59 PM

i have a baby milk snake that is less than 1 foot long. i need to know what to feed it and how often and stuff like that. this is my 1st snake that wasnt a garter or ribbon snake so i dont know much about it
i have been giving it worms, slamanders and small tree frogs, it hasnt tried to eat any of those

would u suggest pinky mice or are they soo big for it?

i would also like to know what kind of habitat it likes

any help or suggestions would be nice

I dont know what kind of milksnake it is, but your best bet is pinkys. If it is an eastern, pinkies, and red bellies seem to be the preferred food, that is if you can get them to eat. They tend to often not eat and starve to death. Worms and insects are not usually a part of the diet. A small pinky is not too large, though it seems so with smaller neonates. Some will also prefer smaller lizards. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

well i just gave him a thawed out pinky mouse and he is trying to eat it... but im not sure if he will be able too. he has been trying to eat it for 1/2 an hour and has yet to get more than the head in his mouth

i will try and take pictures for you guys

i saw a post that someone mentioned a brained pinky and a split-braining pinky? what are they talking about? are they smaller than the regular ones i have?

Well thats good news. Did it eat the normal pinky, or did you have to brain it? Also, what kind of milksnake is it?

Pictures aside the easiest way to tell if it is a rat or milk is to look at it's anal plate. The scale over it's vent. In a milk it is single...one piece. Corns/rats is divided and two plates.

Definitely offer it the smallest pinks you can get. But don't be surprised if it doesn't eat. Milks that are WC are notoriously hard to get to eat.
My honest suggestion is to release it where you found it.

get the smallest pinky you can find put it and the snake in a paper bag and seal it with a paper clip and leave alone for half a hour that worked for my baby kingsnake i had to start breeding mice though to get a steady supply of pinks hope this helps

well there is a pet store just in the nest town so i wont need to start my own mouse colony till i get more snakes... which im hoping i will
