its perfectly normal. how big is your newt? What kind of setup do you have him in? My baby newts (cynopes orientalis) tend to get spots and then they will change color to completely black. Depends upon the habitat, temp, and how young they may be as well.

I do not agree. The red spot is not perfectly normal. However, if it's turning white (and is NOT a fungus, this is important!), then that's a sign of healing. If it is a fungus, you need to take care of that. A fairly easy way to see if it's a fungus either if it's fuzzy, or try to wipe it away with a clean finger. Just try to swipe away at the edge very gently, and if none comes away, then it's probably a healing scab.

Oh, I didn't even notice the red spot. I saw a white spot, but then my baby newt has many of them, and he changes from black with tiny white dots on him to completely black to brown with black spots. If it isn't raised, growing, and the newt appears fine, then I don't worry. It may also be a birthmark. My baby newt has two red dots in front of both his eyes that he has had from birth, and neither have grown. They are just simply markings. If anything, and you are still worried, check with a vet.

There's also a good chance that it was an injury that healed itself over, like the other person who has replied has said. Was the animal wildcaught?
