Collared Lizard's eyes are closed!

MrHobby Sep 12, 2005 02:21 PM

I have read the archives in this forum and I see others have had problems with eye infections. I am using an ointment for treatment (started this morning). My collared has had increased eye problems over the past year. I have always had him on Calci-sand. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Any suggestions for treating the infection or how to prevent it in the future?

Thanks

How big is your sand, and is it very dusty?

Good luck,
Morgan

No, it is not dusty. It is the largest grain size that I could find. I have 2 Collareds in different cages. My second Collared has a somewhat dusty Calci-sand but it does not seem to bother him at all. I don't know if these guys have allergies, but that is what this seems like!!

has it's eyes closed, usually they are not feeling well from something, may have an eye infection. If you see no improvement pretty quick, like within a day or so, I would have it looked at.

But I would like to say, for as long as I can remember hearing about substrates , calci sand has always been SHUNNED by many breeders and keepers of all kinds of lizards. It says that it is fully digestable, but infact is known big time for causing impaction. Go on the bearded dragon forum and just mention calci sand, ask what they think, you will start a calci sand riot, they hate it.

It has caused alot impactions with alot of bearded dragons.

I personally would dump it and put your collared thats having eye problems on paper towels, for now until you figure out why his eyes are closed.

Hope he feels better soon, let us know how he does !
