Uroplatus help

kg Jul 18, 2003 06:14 PM

I'm thinking of getting some type of Uroplatus, so I can watch it at night and enjoy a naturalistic enviroment. I want to set up a test tank and see if I can keep the tank at the right humidity and temperature before I get one. I can't decide on what to get, I really like Uroplatus phantasticus and I could probably get one from Reptile Depot at the next show, but I've read that they're harder to keep than some of the other species , so could someone recommend some other sub-species? I have experience with geckos, but mostly cresteds and leopards. I wouldn't handle it, just watch it. Thank you

I'm not very familiar with any kind of Uroplatus other than sikorae, so I won't be able to help you much. Other than saying that I enjoy watching my guys at night

A word of caution though. I went to the SD Reptile Show last weekend, and I was surprised to see dealers who I otherwise respect and patron selling some reptiles in questionable looking health. The only 3 sikorae I saw at the show looked dehydrated and malnourished.

Plus I can't stand to see them in a 2" tall deli container.

Reptile Depot had some nice looking lineatus though.

Can you email me with their care or a care sheet? Thanks.

i recently got a phantasticus from reptile depot. this is also my first uroplatus. seems to be quite hardy, i just think the biggest thing is stabilizing the temperature and humidity.

It's really hot right now, and my a/c has never worked, so my apartment is a hell hole. Well it's not that hot, just in the 80s, but that's too high for Uroplatus. I'm thinking of ice cubes...

Hi,
I have kept and bred Uroplatus and phantasticus aren't that difficult to keep or to breed. There are no sub-species of U. phantasticus. There is a group that they fall into. This group main memebers are U. ebenaui, U. phantasticus and U. malama. Only two of these you can get. U. ebenaui and U. phantasticus are the two. I like U. phantasticus better than U. ebenaui. They seem to breed better and and are more active. You can keep them as long as you have a cool spot in your house, such as low 70's. They like it as natural as you can get it, but are also hardy and a few mistakes can be allowed. Make sure they have a moist habitat and lots of bark and limbs for climbing. The key to keeping them is to get nice, clean geckos. MAke sure you inspect them over well. Everything is intact, eyes aren't suken in, and the atil isn't curled like a dead leaf.

If you are thinking about breeding them, go for it! Good luck, as I have found a stud male is esential to doing so. It can be hard to find one. I wouldn't advise keeping two males together, but males of U. phantasticus will tolerate this. I am sure a few are mean, and won't. I think that the presence of a male can help aid in breeding,as long as its not full term. They are very hardy and I suggest if you get them to look your Uroplatus over. Make sure you treat them! Many places say they have, but they don't. Its a hassle that they don't care to deal with.

Hey
How do you tell the sex of Uroplatus geckos? Can you leave females in year round or do you just introduce the male for a short period of time?
I think I can keep the enclosure pretty cool. Thanks for the help.

It is easy to tell the sex of U. phants. Males have buldges at the base of their tails and females don't. If the animals are to young to sex, males have the tendency to have a more scalloped and dead looking tail. Not shriveled dead, but like little notches that are taken out of a leaf. This cryptic look in males is found on the tail.

Males and females can be kept together year around. Although if the female is laying to much, seperate her for a rest period. I would do this after she lays 6 clutches, rest her for a month and then introduce them again.

Would it be possible to keep a pair in a 20 gallon long, or would I need a higher tank? Or could you keep singles in 10 gallon tanks?
