Can you tell me if coating a homemade wooden cage with a few coats of polyurathane is safe and non-toxic for reptiles? I would think it is as long as its not too hot(but Im not sure what is TOO hot). Thanks for any advice.

If you use a water based polyurethane and let if completely dry it is safe. Once it is dry wipe down the inside of the cage with a damp sponge to remove and residuals from the curing process.
I have used this both at home and at work to seal cages for not only reptiles but amphibians with no problems.
