hao Sep 13, 2005 08:39 AM

hey guys. i am getting 2 baby leopard gecko this friday. i know that i have to provide a moist/humid hide for them. what is the material that it going to be at the bottom of the hide? can i use moist paper towel? and also, must the hide be dark? can i use a plastic tupperware that is translucent instead so that i can see it? and also, should i house them together or seperately? thanks.

You can use various types of substrate for the inside of the moist hide. Some people use something simple like paper towels that they resoak every few days. Others use peat moss. As long as it can retain the moisture you'll be OK. I would avoid using something translucent since it might stress out your leos. Leos like their privacy, especially since they're so small. Housing 2 baby leos together is not recommended but some people have done it. If you have a large enough tank, I would separate them using a divider. Good Luck!

The best situation for the leos is to house them separately for 2-3 months, to ensure that both are healthy before housing them together. You wouldn't want to infect a healthy one by housing it with a sick one.

You'll want two humid hides (or at least one that's large enough for both, but I think two might be better). I've used both opaque and translucent humid hides, and my leo didn't mind either.

As for substrate in the hide, damp paper towels are perfect for young leos. You may want to avoid things like moss to minimize the chance that they swallow something. Once mine was older, I used a bed of damp moss covered with damp paper towels. This combination kept the hide humid for longer, as the moss held onto moisture and released it into the paper towels slowly.

Also, placing the humid hide near the warm half of the tank will allow for more humidity.

doh...you'll obviously need two humid hides if they're in separate tanks. my comment was for after they're in the same tank.
