Opinions... Pregnant?

northamexotics Sep 13, 2005 11:16 AM

I had not witnessed copulation when she was housed with my male in late Spring but I'll be the first to admit that I wasn't peeking as often as I should have been. She's in shed now (her second one since this Spring) and has shown signs of what I think was heat conservation. She has spent much of her time on the warm end of her normal enclosure.

You can see a huge difference in her girth in the latter half to third of her body. She has been a steady eater but has not been overfed by any stretch of the imagination. My gut feeling is that she HAS to be...

did she stop feeding......if so then most likely gravid, if her feeding habits are unchanged (or similar) then probably not.

If she's not eating and looks like she's getting fatter, gotta be the babies inside!!!!

that didn't know she was supposed to stop eating. She ate weekly all through courtship and all through her pregnancy. Of course, I reduced the size of her prey from a large rat down to a small rat, but her appetite was ever present. She was a Hogg Island. She gave me 17 live, no stills, but 11 slugs.

I would disagree with the blanket statement that pregnant boas cease eating. I have see redtails go to both extremes, so to me that is not a be all-end all sign.

I guess I'll just have to wait it out or get an ultrasound.

exactly, I said probably not, not definately not. It's typical for boa's to stop or significantly reduce feeding during pregnancy. For each one that does eat some there are probably dozens that mostly stop and for the rare one that eats like normal I would venture to guess there are hundreds that basically stop eating.

Again, if she's eating normally, then "probably" not gravid. Watch and check her carefully, if you can see skin between the scales, then she's either fat or gravid. Fat is "usually" all over, not just mid body.

Your pic through a screen top is not that clear. I can't tell if her skin is all stretched out. Don't know how she normally looks either.
