How long can snake eat hoppers?

Jeanin Sep 13, 2005 12:06 PM

Hi
I want to order 100 hoppers this week. Its a pain getting fuzzy pinkies/hoppers around here. Full grown mice are easy but not fuzzies or hoppers.
They only seem to have tiny pinkies or full grown mice than there is the political correct chain type pet store that wont sell them for food.
My snake is an eating machine which I am glad. We got him at reptile expo over summer . He was tiny .He eats around 4 or 5
pinkies a week so want to give him hoppers now. I cant find them around here unless I drive for an hour or more and than at $2 each and gas its cheaper buying hoppers even with shipping.
Place sells minimum 100 hoppers. Can a growing corn live on lots of hoppers (I plan to buy mice after the 100 are eaten)or he wont eat them as he gets bigger and mice eating size?

I imagine he will eat several hoppers a week by next month . He is just starting to get to hopper eating size so cant really get small mice yet.
Thanks

Start out giving your snake 1 hopper a week and up that to two a week, and so on, until they are gone and your snake is ready for adults.
It will not hurt it to eat two or three hoppers until they are gone.

Where'd you get that snake? It looks just like some bandeds that I hatched out 5 yrs ago. I kept back 2 of the girls and they're the spitting image of yours. I sold the rest to Underground Reptiles in Deerfield Beach and they may have sold them at the Daytona show that year.

Just wondering if it was one of "mine".

Cheryl,
I got her from a girl name Lynn.
She was thinning out her collection and I got a few from her.
I don't really know her history. I do know she is het snow.

They would have been het for amel and hypo. The daddy was a hypo type sunglow banded. The resemblence is incredible, I did a double take when I saw the pic! I was hoping it was-it's always fun to be able to keep track of where some of your babies end up and what they're like as adults.

are you sure that he can handle hoppers? Most people would go from pinkies to fuzzies, then to hoppers. Remember that the food item should be no wider than 1-1.5 the size of the width of the snake's belly. If you go too large, you risk regurging.

I thought about that too but I figured if it was eating four or five pinkies at a time it could probably handle a hopper. Especially if they start with the smallest ones first.
I always get various sizes with 100 hoppers. Not large differences but enough of a difference that I can pick larger ones for the ones about ready to move up to weanlings or adults and smaller ones for the ones that have just moved up to hoppers.

Thank you both for the great advice. It never occured to me that pinkies to hoppers is a big jump. Your both so right.
I found a place that sells fuzzies and hoppers. So just ordered 50 of each instead of 50 hoppers.
To have gone from pinkies to hoppers might have been a problem. He did eat a fuzzy 2 weeks ago(only fuzzy for miles lol) but that was a big lump in his body and he was full while the pinkies he eats a few at a time.
This way I will use the fuzzies first than on to the hoppers than regular size mice are easy to get around here but fuzzies close to impossible and hoppers no way.
This snake is an eating machine lol but it could be that the pinkies arent enough. I am glad he eats like crazy.
Thanks again for the help.

I am so glad that you were able to order fuzzies and hoppers.

Enjoy your snake while it is little, they grow up so fast (reminds me of baby humans).

Thanks. I got them today and my snake ate 2 fuzies so will just feed him all the fuzzies than switch to hoppers.
Its a huge amount of mice for the price even with shipping compared to 2 large pinkies at the pet store for $5.
I just thaw out what I need .
