Nematoads/Round Worms (Vet Verdict)

ShaunDuke Jul 18, 2003 07:14 PM

I had to reschedule my appt. that was supposed to on Wed. to today. Anyway, took him to the vet and he has a small amount of Nematoads or Round Worms (Nematoad eggs is what they said and they said its a type of Round Worm *shrug*). Anyway, I was wondering what I should be doing at home with my Beardie. They are giving him antibiotics, one for today and another dose probably in 2-3 weeks (they said that the one he got should take care of it, but just in case he has more they will do another dose). Are Roundworms like Coccidia where if there is any on the substrate he can get them again? I just want to know if I should be putting him on paper until this is over.

Thanks.

Nematodes encompass a wide variety of worms, found in reptiles. Although they can compromise an animals health if left untreated, they are relatively minor to treat and rid an animals of. Meds commonly used are panacur and metronidazole and rare are their any problems or reactions to these drugs.

They are not like coccidia in life cycle and one time cleaning out your enclosure should be sufficient to rid of any on the surface area or substrate.

Below is a link on several short articles that I think are interesting... these are written by Dr Ivan Alphonso, DVM from Orlando FLorida on reptile parasites and worms, one area outlines nematodes.

Dr Alphonso raises lizards himself and shouold anyone in that area need a vet he has an active practice there and is really an knowledgable caring exotic expert
