How can I cut my iquana's nails?

numetal Sep 13, 2005 09:56 PM

What should I use to cut, because that's no professional pet shop around my place. Can I use a human finger nail cutter? And what's the step to cut their nails? thanks!

You can use the same nail clippers that you would on a cat. There is also a "nail" melter out there that you can buy that gives them more of a smooth result but I don't use it. Human nail clippers would be too risky because of the way they are shaped. There is a picture on my website under "picnic" pictures that shows an iguana having his nails done. Enter the site to the index page and scroll down to where you see "2004 Pig-nic pictures" then scroll down to the last picture and you can see how to hold your ig. Sometimes I clip mine when they are just plopped somewhere, but they are older and pretty docile. If yours is younger and more active get someone to help you.

I usually wait until sunny is in a deep sleep and then cut them one by one until she wakes up...

i use a human clip and a towel. i used to use a pillowcase. there are special clips you can get at petshops that look pretty neat. i keep planning on getting one but keep putting it off. just cut off the very tip or they will bleed. once you trim them a few times they get used to it. you don't really have to do it that often. they are much more fun to handle after they have been trmmed.
