Curious Question (could happen to anyone)

LizardSmoke Sep 13, 2005 10:16 PM

What would happen if you broke a florescent tube by accident over your cage or aquarium?? I mean how would you clean it up?? You would have to through everything out even the aquarium. Isn't the stuff inside really toxic??

Yes it is. Grab all your herps in the house and clear the area for the day. Get all the windows open asap. I think I have some more info on this, let me get back to you if no one else replies.

Yeah I would like to have more info on that in case it happens. You never know with children around.=)
Mostly I would like to know, do you have to throw stuff out, like rocks, branches, or the aquarium itself???

I can't find the info I had about those.

But I waould santize everything a few days later once or twice to ensure safety of residual chemicals and gasses.

not sure about the cleaning but watched a show recently on how they are made there is a tiny drop of mercury placed inside them, that is what is dangerous...

although there are other chemicals also which they didn't go into the danger of...possibly could be dangerous to lizards but not humans...

I had a UVB florescent light fall out of the fixture and break in my bearded dragon cage. Fortunately, she was on the other side of her basking log, so wasn't hit by the tube coming down. I just took her out, all the other items in the tank, picked up all the large sections of glass then vacuumned up the small pieces of glass. She never showed any health issues and I certainly didn't notice any murcury lying around. Most likely, if there was any, it was vacuumned up with the small shards of glass.

Really?? I knew that it had to happen to somebody, somewhere. That's awful to here it happened to you, but on the other hand good to know your beardie wasn't hurt. It is also good to know you can just vaccum it up and have no health risks.
