"The Loss of a Good Friend" SATO the Green Iguana

tjg Sep 13, 2005 10:18 PM

Sunday night I came home from vacation to find my Iguana sleeping, but he wasn't sleeping he had just died only an hour before I got home. I cared for this giant of a lizard for 8 years, I watched him grow from a lizard you could secure with one hand to a proud male Green Iguana too large to carry! His nick name was "Sato The Destroyer", but to me he was a wild creature that allowed me to share his space without judgement or fear. The silent looks and constant awareness are what I will remember, and of course I can never forget the killer instincts that he showed when he caught sight of a banana, nothing could hold him back! I new the end was near a few weeks back when he showed no interest in the pieces of bananas topping his green salad. This lizard was my family, as much of pain in the but each of us were to the other. I will never forget the Green Iguana that touched my life! Here are some pictures I would like to share..

Sorry to hear of your loss. Was Sato a rescue iguana? I know how you feel about your ig being part of the family. We take ours with us on vacations, and stay in pet-friendly hotels.

I hate to think of how it will be when i lose sunshine. Many times these huge animals come into our lives quite unexpectadly and stay for many years. We bend over backwards for them, we chop and mash food, mix supplements, change light bulbs, endure whips and scratches that leave impressive scars, and then we complain and get frustrated with their quiet independence and unbending pride, but in the end we realise that these animals show their love to us in a completely different way than any other animal. They allow us to share in THEIR lives, give us the chance to touch them, look into the wild through their eyes, and give us the rewarding experience of knowing how they like their food chopped JUST SO, or where their favorite basking and hiding spots are. I am sure that your ig friend will be dearly missed. But know that he died quietly, peacefully, and in a place where he was dearly loved and comfortable. I am sorry for your loss.

He wasn't a rescue I purchased him as a little tike from a pet shop in South Carolina that didn't know squat about Green Iguanas and I knew less.
