I haven't had it long. It definitely does not eat the same way as an Albig or Argus. Still it is a very cool creature.

Nice dum. I've always thought they were intriguing. There is a local guy here in Cal who is incubating eggs--very tempting.

I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

Mine has alot of gusto. He does approach his food differently though. He closes his eye and rears his head down , bites and shakes vigorously. My argus just simply leap up to grab anything they can then swallow head first, sideways, backways, upside down, they dont care. haha
Here is my male he is a big fella. If only I had a Big Female, my girl is a tiny little thing. One of the many problems when you don't get animals at the sametime and one grows to an extreme.

Jody, if you don't mind me asking:
What do you feed yours as a staple? mice?
Mine is almost 3 feet, how long is yours?
I fed mine a live newborn rabbit today. He took it to the water and eviscerated it in there. The other types of monitors of similar size would have just swallowed it down. It is pretty nasty but interesting as well. It is totally different than what I am used to, which makes it so interesting.

I am not sure how long he is haven't measure him since he hit 4 foot a year ago. But he is bigger now and bulky.
I feed all of my monitors mice, chicks, rats as a staple diet. Then I mix in other things after that on occasion. My dumerils are fond of smelt, crabs, etc.
Most anything given to a dumerils is scratched scrapped and tore apart. That seems to be what they do. The only time mine don't is if it is something that fits nicely in the mouth. But sometimes they still insist on it.
My first monitor was a dumeril's that I got about 10 years ago and she is still going strong. I hatched a bunch of them for a couple of years.
One of my favorite monitors.

Would you mind if I bounced a few questions off you via e-mail? Specifically, I have a few things I'd like to ask you about your dum breeding.
But, I understand if you don't want to be bothered.
Thanks,
Sam

thats awesome maybe I should send you my male.
I got her a new male a couple years ago, I just haven't put much effort into them.
I don't know the size difference in yours, but my female was less than half the size of my male when she first started producing. The link is a picture of her laying on his head.

Mine looks smaller then that compared to my male. His leg is as thick as her tail easily. I am not sure how he would be able to line up to breed with her haha
When I got them they were like the size difference in your picture. The female is not a power eater and I have tried alot of things to get her that way and to grow faster. But he grew and still is growing so fast it is hard for me to get her caught up. But your picture gives me more hope that I am not so far off.
Found some old pics. Thought you might like this one.

You know I still am unsure of the sex of the one. Hopefully one of these days I will be 100% sure. I think it is a he/she or she/he. I definatly know why you didnt want to make the call on it. haha
Oh well, it's probably sterile anyways...

i didnt know if you got him or not

Yup, I got him on Sunday. He crapped on me the first time I held him at the show. He is coming around getting better color and his skin is not as baggy as it was. He was very dehydrated and hungry when I got him home. He drank water for 5 to 10 minutes strait. He has not crapped on me since the one time at the show.
My wife got a baby Argentine B&W Tegu on Sunday also. She researched them after you told her how calm yours was. That may be the coolest reptile I have ever had.

and he went from the little green headed baby to a nearly 3 foot monster of a lizard in that 1 year, they are incredible pets i think. of course when i got mine my mom said he was cute now she thinks its so ugly, because it no longer has that green color, its more than 4 times the lenght, and 20 times the wieght, and dosnt just feed on insects anymore. post some pics of the tegu and its setup id love to see it
and more than a foot ago

I'll post some pics early next week. I am heading out of town tomorrow. I can't wait for it to get as big as yours.
It and my cat "play" with each other though the glass of its enclosure. I keep thinking, "what the heck are you gonna do if you got to the cat." It is even more active than any monitor I had, and will run up to my wife and I.

good my tegu did the same thing with my dog, now it will actually lay ontop of my dog for body heat, baby tegus are like baby monitors on crack!!!! when mine was small i kept it on that bed-a-beast bedding mixed with sand about 1 foot deep he went nuts i was so tempted to buy another baby tegu at the show( but im still about $700 away from a serval), i wish mine would have stayed a baby forever, when mine was a baby it was realy awsome and so active, but when they get big they are cool if you like a lap type lizard mine is so tame it leans in to get pet, it purrs when i pet it, after about 6 months mine started becoming lazy exept when feeding( its hard to believe such a fat lizard can move so fast), the first year of life you will see such a huge change in it pay close attention.
