iceyesnteeth Sep 14, 2005 01:50 PM

anyone know of plans online on how to build a misting system? i dont want anything large as it will be misting a rather small enclosure, maybe 40 gallons tops.i can link it to an outlet light timer but am not sure how to go about the mister part.id rather not purchase an expensive unit made for reptiles but maybe someone knows of a way to build one from parts at homedepot? or if not a cheapest small unit i can buy.thanks

Good misting system, great people.

I made one before, didnt like them, tend to have more problems then it was useful. I have 23 chondros right now and mist by hand. I know people with larger collections who dont use misting systmes. I think there is really no use for them as long as you have a hour free a week.

i agree that they are not really needed... i bought one and used it for about 1 week and decided not to use it...

I use my misting time as an opportunity to check out my chondro and make sure she looks alright, to make sure there's nothing wrong in the viv and to check for poop, dirty water etc. I don't think I'd like to give that up for an automated system.

I use a pressurized sprayer. It is the same thing as the large water pistols. Pump it 10-15 times and i've got enough pressure to spray one cage, costed $8.00-$10.00 dollars at wal-mart and i've had it about a year. The Reptile specific misters are not priced to bad. By the time you figure in all the material, time and Gas money in gathering said material, how much will you have saved??

I have two PRO MIST systems and love them I've been using them for years no problems unless you have hard water then you would have to use RO water.

yea i agree guys,i have always hand misted and there is no reason to buy one.to be totally honest, the only reason why i want to add one is they are so cool.just stiting on the couch watching the simpsons and then the sprayer kicks on..lol.its pretty impressive to have a setup with all the bells and wistles, even if they are not needed..lol.i guess thats why im looking for a cheap one.its not important enought for me to shell out a bunch of money but if i can make/buy one for 25 bucks, well then i figure why not.its not that im lazy but like said, its kinda impressive and zoo like to have everything(lights, misting) on a timer.i have read that chondros do better with a normal routine but the real reason is its just plain cool.lol.thanks for the help and meg,i dont need any more reasons to inspect my snakes.most days i find myself sitting for hours infront of their cages anyway lol thanks again.oh by the way,my new cage has a waterfall.its the first waterfall i ever put in a chondro cage.i know that chondros dont need moving water to drink like chameleons but i have noticed him drinking more since i installed it last week.maybe it just stimulates him or maybe i just never noticed him drinking untill i built this new cage and have been spending hours looking at it and making changes.who knows, just thought it was worth mentioning.

I think the waterfall would just look cool, no matter what! Mine drinks from her water bowl, and yesterday she took to the floor and was drinking off the plants.

yea in my new vivarium i decided im not even going to add a waterbowl in there.i have a waterfall, that ends with a little pool,i have a few "jungle pods"that usually collect misting water, and i have a few bromelids, that if youre not familiar with, are strange looking ,flowering plants that collect rain (or misting water in my case)in a little pool in the center of the leaves.dart frog keeps commonly keep broms for the same reason and since they hold pools of water, some species of darts actually lay thier eggs and tadpols live in there for a bit till they grow legs.anyway, there are plenty of places that water accumulates ,not to mention on the glass,so im not going to ruin my vivariums natural appearance with an obvious waterbowl.it hasnt even filled in yet and i already love it.i cant wait till the moss begins to crawl up the back wall and my newly planted ferns and vines get past their transplant shock and wilting and begin to fill out as well.im now starting to get an understanding of what dartfrog owners mean when they say they love their cages almost as much as the frogs themselves! lol.i have so many things going on and i hope to achive much more.right now i have lots of plants and ferns,bromileds,3 species of live moss, but id love, once it gets going,to have some litches, fungus, and maybe another carnivorous plant to go with my venus flytrap.im really going to have to see how my snake deals in his new cage before i know exactly what i can get away with.the venus flytrap is really the only fragile plant in there and i kinda have it protected a bit by an overhanging piece of driftwood, but i imagine it will get trampled sometime soon.its a shame more people dont use live plants in with their chondros.if one has a huge collection, its very hard to maintain, but if someone has some time on their hands, and would like to have a little piece of the rainforest in their living room, they are awsome.besides greg maxwell, who im pretty sure uses real outside collected branches and live plants in some of his cages, anyone else here keep their chondros in a live planted cage?

I was using a misting system from Wetworks (www.wetworksms.com) and was ok, however I'm waiting for new nozzles and have been misting by hand lately. I only have one GTP.

I really only bought it originally in case I travel out of town for a week or something, but started using it reguarly. When I mist by hand by hand, my snake seems to tighten her coil and bury her head when I open the door an, so I stopped. Conditioning I guess.
