Boa vs. Python

bigd2832 Sep 14, 2005 03:48 PM

I'm heading to a show in a few weeks and can't decide what to buy. I want a colorful snake that can be handled and become very docile. I have been looking at Brazilian Rainboe Boas, Dumeril's, Blood pythons, and Carpten pythons. Which will be the best snake that will be very handlable.

THERES NO BEAUTY LIKE THE BEAUTY OF A TRUE REDTAIL

Bottom line, you need to look around and decide what you like first.

Then select a animal you like.

BRB's are nice colorful animals that do not get too big, only 5 - 6 feet and relatively slender. Mine are very handleable (except one that can be nippy if overhandled).

Dum's, don't have any myself so can't speak to temperment. I have seen some adults that were quite large...not so much long as very girthy.

BCI's, many local's and morphs to choose from. I have several and all are also handleable. Larger then the BRB's and I could see them not being as easy to just pull out and handle/show off. I have a 11' adult that while tame is still quite a handfull (or 4) to just pick up.

BCC's, the "true redtails" again I don't have any myself. I've heard they are a little harder to care for but I'm not certain what the differences (difficulties) are.

I have nothing against Pythons, but I think their heads look kind of strange to me, especially balls. I like them because I like all snakes, but I am not a python man. I used to own a large Columbian Boa, and he was awesome. My friend has him now, and he is very tame. They can reach 10 feet, though. I have a Hog Island Boa that is a baby, but she seems so docile. I would say, if you can handle a large animal at 10 feet, then go with a boa. Ball python stay small, and although I am not a python man, I hear that they are nice snakes to keep. Let us know what you get! Derek

Your snake is beautiful where did you get it and how much. What type of boa is it?

kingsnaken Sep 14, 2005 08:48 PM

Thank you. It is a Hog Island Boa. I got her from Rio Bravo Reptiles. I bought her for 200.00 at the Daytona Expo. I have seen them from 150.00 up to 500.00. They sell them in the classifieds. Derek

I believe Regal Reptiles has Hogs, and they will be at the show. I don't know anything about them, except that they had Hogs in the classifieds at one time. Derek
