Westerns vs. Easterns

MikeLosey Jul 18, 2003 08:45 PM

Can I feed the Westerns the same as I feed the Easterns? Mainly veggies, some fruits and occassional earthworms or crickets?

Hi,

Yes, what you've listed will be more than fine!

box turtles need a varied diet, dont stick to the same things every meal,
I'm sure you wouldn't like hot dogs or hamburgers every single day for your entire life..

easterns require approximately 50% protein in their diet: earthworms, slugs, pill bugs,, boiled chicken, very lowfat dogfood, to name a few. I have found Tess Cook's website very helpful, and am including a link below. I would encourage you to read it, as its full of valuable information.

...and the western or Ornate box turtle requires about 75% protein.

Western box turtles (aka ornate) need more protein in their diet. With the diet you describe, your easterns need more protein also.

Easterns: 40-50% protein, 40% veggie, 10% fruit
Ornate: 60% protein, 30% veggie, 10% fruit.

If you dont feed more protein than you do currently, your turtles will likely survive, but they wont thrive. They need the protein for growth, and to produce healthy eggs.
