New project.. what possiblities.. what can I add?

rjhilo Sep 14, 2005 08:22 PM

Well I recently aquired two baby columbians from somebody at a local reptile society, I didn't get to go into much detail with him, but I was wondering what my possibilties were with these two. Both are anery's in appearance.

My male is from a Anery 66% het snow to a Snow.
My female is from an Anery het snow to Anery het snow

Please excuse my redundancy, I'm sure you guys/gals get this all the time, but genetics isn't a strong understanding of mine. So I guess my question is what are my possibilites from breeding these two. What If I get a 1.1 albino's and swap them out? Thanks in advance to anybody who responds.

Male is a anery 100% het for albino aka het for snow The female would be anery 50% poss het for snow. Breed them together and you could get snows and anerys poss het for snow if the female proves to be a het, if shes not a het then you will get all anerys poss het for albino.

If I understand you correctly both your boas are anery with a 66% chance of being het for snow. If that is the case a pair of albinos guaranteed het snow or poss. het snow would be a good idea. All babies produced by breeding the albinos to the anerys would be 100% het snow, and you could get lucky and produce some snows(I am biased though, because I have albino poss hets for sale LOL.) My bad, reread your post, noticed the one is 100% het snow, you really do need some albino poss. hets. LOL

From your info:

Male is Anery 100% het for albino (snow).
Female is Anery 66% het for Albino (snow).

Which means if bred together, two possibilities:

1. Female proves to be het for Albino,
25% of the babies would be Snows
50% of the babies would show Anery and be het for Albino
25% of the babies would show Anery and NOT be het for Albino.
or 25% of the babies would be snows,
the rest would be Anery 66% het for albino.

2. Female proves to NOT be het for Albino,
all babies would be Anery 50% het for albino.

for adding to what you have, the male is your better animal being 100% het. If you want to produce snows, I'd get a female Albino 100% het for Anery. If you want sunglows, I'd add a hypo het albino. if you want ghosts, add a hypo het anery.

If those genetics are true, you found some genetically amazing animals (for pet shop boas). Your male (anery 100% het albino) has a market value of $1,200 - $2,000 and the female (anery 66% het. albino) from $400-$700. That's some serious money to be dropping on your way to pick up a feeder mouse for that one little guy who is not taking frozen/thawed yet. You're guaranteed snows by pairing your male with a female:

snow
anery het. albino
albino het. anery
DH snow
or the big money hypo DH snows

For your best return, I would shoot for an albino het. anery female. Keep your current female and maybe she will prove. Worst case, you get normals and anerys all 50% het. albino. Breeding him to a normal albino female will yield only albinos and normals all het. for anery. Good luck with them.

the original post indicated they came from a "a local reptile society" not a pet store. I agree it would be quite surprising to find such boa's at a typical pet store.

100% agreed with your recomendation on Albino het anery (if you want snows).
