Pedialyte as drinking source?

Cronus20 Sep 14, 2005 08:29 PM

I heard about using pedialyte for dehydrated animals. My panther recently laid eggs (35!), so I decided to take that advice and try letting her drink some. Not only did she gulp it up, I tried giving some to my other chameleons to see what would happen. THEY LOVE IT. While usually it takes about 2 mins of pre showering and hand misting for them to grudingly take water, a few squirts of this stuff via hand mister and they're drinking with gusto. I'm aware of oversupplementation, but would giving pedialyte as a daily water source be something that is not recommended? Im thinking it probably isn't hot idea but I would appreciate any imput. Thanks!

Pedialyte is only for rehydrating chams who can't or won't drink on their own. You can cause an imbalance in electrolytes if you give it when the cham is drinking and eating normally. It is a pretty powerful mix of nutrients and shouldn't be needed, and may just be excreted rather than used. If I had a cham who was stressed and not drinking normally for some reason (maybe right after laying as you said) I might offer some for a day, but once the cham was OK, stop using it.
