Ringneck coloration...what's the difference?

TrpnBils Sep 14, 2005 09:51 PM

I'm from PA and I've only ever found a few ringnecks around here. I found one tonight that topped out at around 4" or so, snapped a few pictures, and then noticed later on that it looked different than one in my field guide. The photo in the field guide was taken two counties over and that snake has a yellow underside. This one was red underneath.

Is it some subspecies or a difference in age maybe? What's the deal?

Do you mind donating that specimen?

I have noticed there is a population of Northern Ringneck snakes in PA that seem to have been intergraded with another sub-species. I think the Mississippi Ringneck. It's not a natural occuring event, someone must've let go another sub-species and they just bred their way in.

I would, but I don't know how much good it'll do...lol

When I found it, it had been recently killed and was laying on a path where I was walking. It still looked good and I didn't actually know it was dead until after I took the pictures, and it was still soft, so that leads me to believe that I may have stepped on it when I went through that area about 5 minutes before

If it'll be any good, I can go look to see if it's still there, or I can post the pictures if you want. I don't know if either of those would be worthwhile, but it's your call. I've spent all summer looking for ringnecks up here and that's the first one I've found in like 4 years. I'm not real sure what I'm doing wrong!

I'd like to see the pics.

Where was it found?

I know the intergrades occur in and around the Pocono Mountains.

Well, there may be a second population then. This guy was found in Asbury Woods, right outside of Erie.

Do you have any more info on it? You've got me interested now...haha

That's not a ringneck snake. It's a Northern Red Belly Snake. Close relative of the Northern Brown Snake(or Dekay's Snake).

I mean, that's still cool because that'd be a lifer for me... but what about the yellow ring on its neck?

what I was asking was how you can tell the difference if they both had a band around the neck. I got out a field guide last night and did some reading after I posted here...I thought it was an undeveloped band (because of the age) - I didn't realize it was actually just 3 spots.

HerperHelmz Sep 16, 2005 02:55 PM

In just about everywhere where the red belly snakes occur, ringnecks occur. The ringnecks may or may not have a whole ring depending on the sub-species. But you can tell the difference between the two because the red belly snake has a red belly, and everywhere where the two occur together, none of the ringneck snakes should naturally have a red belly.

Because I would look at that and say it's a ringneck, but it has a red underside. I also don't see the stripes of the redbelly. One of your hybrids?

A buddy of mine sent me that pic, a regal ringneck snake from CA.

Here is a pic of one of my AZ regal ringneck snakes.
