Just a wierd question....

notallthere Sep 14, 2005 10:02 PM

I personally have two ball pythons...... But my girlfriend has two kingsnakes.... The female being a brooks kingsnake.... And the other being (which we believe to be a male)a banded 50/50 cal mountain kingsnake.... So I guess I have two questions for anyone willing to answer... Is it possible for the two of them to mate.... And besides probing or popping what's the easiest way to determine the sex on the little guys?

......50-50 cal.mountain king....???....50/50 is some designer morph(white bands equally as wide as the black/brown ones) of the california kingsnake(lampropeltis getula californiae)....a cal. mountain kinsnake(lampropeltis pyromelana) is a tricolored king-red,black,and white....you could probably get the florida(lampropeltis getula 'brooksi') king to mate with the californiae.....but not the cal. mntn. king.

I agree with what you said except CA Mtn. Kings are L. zonata, not L. pyromelana. L. pyromelana is the AZ Mtn. King.

Thanks for the help..... now what my girlfriend wants to know is if she would at all be able to breed the two of them or would she be safer not even trying

Yes they are capable of producing healthy offspring. Since they are the same species (L. getula) probably no tricks would be needed. Just the standard procedure for kings with hibernation cycling, feeding, sheds, etc. but watch them carefully when they are together to make sure one doesn't try to eat the other. That can happen even when breeding Cal to Cal or Brook's to Brook's.

thanks again for yer help......... one last question.... is there a specific way to tell the sexes besides getting them probed or popped.... the brooks we know is a female.... she got the cal at a petstore recently so i'm thinking it might be a male... because when it comes to ball pythons(since that's what i know) i know that it's very rare to get a female at a pet store

Sometimes you can tell by looking at the tail. Males have a longer more tapered tail than females of the same size. It is hard to tell though if you don't have experience. There may be more male Kings available in the pet stores but the difference in value between male and female Kings is not as great as it is in Ball Pythons so there is a greater likelyhood of finding a female King in a pet store than there is with Balls. You would probably be better off finding someone to probe it for you.
