I bought the ZooMed 501 canister filter but mind you I have only one mud turtle in the tank.
I've used the internal "quick polish" type filters and the power filters but I had to use one of each at the same time because neither type would keep that water clean by itself in the few inches of water.
This 501 isn't as fabulous as my Magnum 350 that I use for the deeper painted turtle tank but so far it is the best one I've ever used for the mud turtle.
I like the 501 but if someone had any ideas for anything better I'd be all ears.

The whisper internal tank filters work well. I have their largest one running about 40 gallons of water in a 55g tank with two yearling turtles in it and it's doing an excellent job. The box, I believe, said it could run in as little as two inches of water.
