Name this Cicada! (For Lele and all you bug nuts!)

gomezvi Sep 15, 2005 10:28 AM

July gave us the HOTTEST temps I've ever been exposed to- got up to about 120. Simply incredible heat! Right smack in the middle of all this heat, the cicadas came out in full force. They were EVERYWHERE and the noise was just crazy!
I snapped a picture of this one cicada who was kind enough to sit on my porch long enough for my son Aaron and I to get a good, long study. Aaron loves this picture. Can anyone tell me a little more about it? What type of cicada is it, is it a 7 or 15 year cicada, and are they safe to feed to your chameleons.

it looks very much like the cicadas we had last summer here in ohio. people were acting as if it was the end of the world haha. i just looked it up (the ones from ohio), and it says that they are simply called periodical cicadas....i'm sure thats just the common name, but it says they come out every 17 years....but i'm not sure where you are sooooooo i have no idea. hope that helped!

I am not sure which it is. We have very few up here and the "swarm" from last year didn't make it this far north. I know there were red-eyed and blue-eyed ones. U of AZ has a comprehensive entomology Dept. so they could probably tell you. You can also post it on www.bugguide.net and I am sure someone can tell you there. Even if not, be sure to check out the cool cicada pics they have (just doa search for all of them). Chris Wirth has a really neat set of one molting.

I did a little digging (pardon the obvious pun) and I came up with this info.
Turns out its a 2-3 year cicada.

does that one have the red/brown upside-down flamingo necks on its thorax? Did you know that wing venation is used to i.d. species of flies, dragonflies and other insects? Probably can on cicadas, too, but even I am not that much of a bug geek! (well, OK, I have been known to do it. Just don't tell anyone and I promise I won't post any pics of you in weird ties
