Hello all. My name is tre. I am familiar with animals and alot of lizards and snakes.
Well anyway, today my boyfriend almost ran over a turtle on the way home for lunch. we live in a very crowded semi-suberban area not more than 5 minutes from philadelphia. Well we are such animal lovers he ran out of the car to save the little girl ( i think) been awhile since i sexed a turtle, but looks female to me. My bf has the car and had to get back to work so i placed her on the patio with a metal fencing around her. It's actually my hamsters play pen but i'm sure she doesn't mind sharing if i wash it off.

Well my aunt lives not to far near a very small patch of woods we always used to take our turtle resues there, but i'm worried because it's so civilied in this area. the woods aren't that big. I was thinking of keeping her in our yard, but we have a seivce that mows our lawn once a week and i know she just might escape. Oh but i just love turtles. not sure what i should do for her. (my aunt has a garden we usually place them there. (everyone i know will pick them up if seen and we bring them there) they usually just escape and go into the woods, but i'm so worried that they won't be safe. is my yard safer? sigh thanks for any help or advice!

Oh i did give her water in a very shallow dish, i think i won't be able to take her anywhere til friday night or saturday. please advice!

You didn't mention if it was a boxie or not.

In any case it is usually best to help it cross the road and leave it if it is in a habitat that it looks like it came from.

If you are in a residential area, it is probably somebodies pet and you might put up some 'found' posters.

Then there are the rehabbers... you've got to have some in the Philly area that can help you with a course of action.

Check you local herp society or turtle and tortoise club. Keep in mind that this time of year these guys are on the move looking for hibernation spots so they are frequently found crossing the roads where they naturally occur.

Theres a great wildlife refuge in Medford, NJ which is probably only about 45-60 min away from you. They take all kinds of wildlife and at the moment have around 12 eastern box turtles (i think) I'll give you there website where you'll find their phone number.
