amieva help

i_heart_geckos Sep 15, 2005 06:56 PM

I just bought an Ameiva over the weekend, and everytime I do a search it leads me to Tegue's. It didn't eat the crickets I put in, and I'm not sure if it was the ameiva, or the crickets that ate the piece of lettuce I put in. My sister said that it may not be eating cause it may not be warm enough, but I did put it next to my Gecko's tank so that the heat could reach him too. Cause I'm not entirely sure on what his temperature should be at.

Of course depends in the actual species, but as a rule of thumb all ameivas nee very bright lights (metla halides, 20 000 lux and more at the basking spot) and basking spot temps around 100 F. Lots of substrate to dig, a sandy dryer area to run and some moist corners. Ameiva ameiva should be kept in a tanl of at least 4 x 3 ft floor space, but bigger is more recommended. Often the bigger Cnemidophorus species are mixed up with ameivas. Which species do you have?

Hope that helps
