under tank heater, good idea at night?

spottedragon Sep 15, 2005 07:49 PM

My dorm roomate likes to keep the air conditioner that i paid for as cold as it can get, even at night. She sleeps under one of the biggest comforters ive ever seen and shes not real fond of the beardies so i think i need to buy a heater so they dont freeze anymore. I know it gets under 60 at night in the room. Has anyone had a bad experience with them? Is it a good idea to keep one on at night or no? Will it keep them at a good sleeping temp or keep them up all night through 2 inches of sand? Thanks for any info!

You might want to think about a ciramic heater aswell. They fit into light sockets and act like a bulb without light. You would need a weaker one, or a dimmer to make sure it doesnt give off daytime temperatures though.

If temps drop below 50, then I'd use a ceramic (aka infared) bulb. I don't know how effective those undertank heaters are. I'm not sure how efficient the heat transfer is.

Just so that you are aware....the temperatures in the australian desert can drop around 50 degrees at night. So if they can survive in the wild there...they should be fine in your apartment. If you notice that they are sleeping all the time, even during the day, you may want to consider the night time heating.

An under the tank heater won't produce much heat through two inches of sand. I know this for a fact because my geckos have under the tank heaters and when I had them on sand it didn't give them enough heat.
