Best species for a first time boa owner?

Kinglvr Sep 15, 2005 08:08 PM

Hey everyone, I was just wondering what would be the best species of boids to acquire for my first one? Are they tameable? Do they mind being held after getting used to you? I'd just like some positive comments from you boa owners that could convince me of getting one. I own two Kingsnakes right now, I'm very partial to Kings for their personality especially, along with their great looks. Anyhow, any comments or info. that any of you could give a guy that's VERY unfamiliar with Boas, it'd be great.

Besides the opinions you get here, I hope you will invest some time learning about the different boa forms, and get some of the books. With that said ... I really enjoy the Kenyan sand boas, especially the anery ones. I think they make a really good first boa, are very easy to care for, adult size won't be a problem, and you can get this morph at a really good price. If you prefer a Boa constrictor form you might want to check out Hog Island boas, Cay Caulker boas, and Tarahumara mountain boas. I have these forms and are very fond of them. I also know that they will never get large enough to require 2 people to handle them

Thanks for the informative feedback. Could you post some more pics of some of the ones you listed? I'm definitely gonna do research before delving into the world of these creatures, but I will be getting one within the next 6 months for sure. I'm on this website everyday (usually in the Kingsnake forum), so I'll have plenty of time to read up on them.

Also, how readily available are some of the snakes that you mentioned? I mean obviously I couldn't find them at just any reptile shop (the one I go to only has Dumeril's, Red-Tailed; they don't say where they're from though, just "Red-Tailed", I don't like that. Anyway, would I have to go to some big Expo to find, say, a Hog-Island Boa?

Although I got this little beauty at the Daytona Expo, You can go in the Boa Classifieds and see what is out there. There are allot of different types of boas to choose from. Look through there to see what you like as far as looks go, and then do research to see if that is the one that is suitable for you. I also have kings, but I decided to get this Hog Island Boa. She is great to hold. Very Docile. Derek
