Two new geckos...lots of questions...help please

gryhndmom Sep 15, 2005 09:28 PM

We recently lost our first leopard gecko to illness and we are trying it again, so we are not totally new to geckos, but only had one and now have two. We purchased two geckos from a local pet store, they were housed in the same enclosure and are about 3 months old. Here are my questions:
1 - when they mature to adults will they continue to get along (since we won't know their sexes for about 3 months or so we don't know what we have. They are getting along just fine now.
2 - how often should we feed these little ones? Two or three times a day?
3 - Is it okay to feed a constant diet of mealworms if the worms are in a bowl with veggies and calcium supplement? What veggies or food should be put in the bowl with the worms?
4 - Is it okay to leave this bowl of veggies and worms in the enclosure with the geckos? Will the geckos only eat the worms or will they eat the veggies too?
5 - We have a large hide box (plenty of room for both), a humid corner, a water dish and two tree branches for them to crawl on. Also have an undertank heating pad and a blue light/white light as needed and depending on the time of day. Do I need to provide toys or other enrichment items for them? I don't want them to be bored.
Any help would be great. We would like to have these little ones with us for a very long time!!!
Thanks - Tammi

if they are a male and female, you will need to seperate, males become sexually active at around 8-9 months of age, if the female is bred that young there eill be probelms in the future, plus he will constantly nag her

if they are two females they most likely will, but they are territorial geckos, so watch out for fights, if you notice bite marks, seperate

if they are both males..i'm sure you know you cannot keep 2 males together...both, or one will end up dead

2 - how often should we feed these little ones? Two or three times a day?

once every 2 days is fine, feed them as much as they will eat

3 - Is it okay to feed a constant diet of mealworms if the worms are in a bowl with veggies and calcium supplement? What veggies or food should be put in the bowl with the worms?

a staple diet of strictly mealworms is fine, most breeders, including me swear by them, you will want to feed the mealworms 24 hours prior to feeding them to the geckos

you can feed them dandelion greens, bok choy mustard greens, apple, potato, sweet potato, carrot, escarole, i feel that a natural veggi/fruit diet for the worms is best for the geckos

4 - Is it okay to leave this bowl of veggies and worms in the enclosure with the geckos? Will the geckos only eat the worms or will they eat the veggies too?

as i said above, you will want to feed the worms 24 hours prior, you can pit a small chink of carrot for the worms to munch on, but dont gutload them while they are in the enclosure

make sure you have a thermostat for the lights and heating pads, you dont want them to overheat, they wont be bored, as long as they have food, a place to hide, water, and calcium, they are happy, you may also want to put a small dish of calcium in with them, they do lap it up, make sure its purce calcium, no d3, only use d3 when feeding

heres a picture of how i keep mine, very simple, but they are happy
