My first impression of "Mazuri: Crocodilian Diet"

goini04 Sep 15, 2005 10:50 PM

Hello Everyone,

I was finally shipped a couple free samples of Mazuri: Crocodilian Diet. They were kind enough to send me a 50lb bag of small biscuits and a 40lb bag of large biscuits. As instructions on the bag had said to do, I fed them as much as they wanted of it. I tried both the small and the large to see which one they preferred. As most of you know I have two American Alligators. One (Evander) attacked the stuff and ate it as quickly as I would a freshly cooked medium well New York strip! The other (Tyson) was about as enthusiastic about it as I would be sitting down to eat a cucumber (will eat it, but would certainly prefer something better). However, he managed to work with it and did get his fill.

As for it's mess, well the small biscuits are perfectly fine. They all floated at the top and waited as Evander came around like he was a reptilian vaccuum cleaner. Tyson, well he wasn't the least bit interested in the small biscuits. Overall, the small biscuits held together much better than the large. The large when broken up turned into a very grainy substance in the pool. I immediately after feeding had to go in with a cleaning net and clean up the pool (didn't want to leave it in there for the filter to just get clogged up).

I cannot comment on health considering it was my first usage, however the diet looks pretty good as far as contents. If you are unable to find the ingredients or nutrition info online, if you email me I am happy to send you a PDF file with the nutrition info for both small and large biscuits.

Thanks for reading!

and as all of us are wondering, how did you swing free samples? I'd take a 50 lb free sample. That would last a year!

Haha!! Actually, it's as simple as emailing them via their website and explaining that you wish to sample their diet for your crocodilians as you have heard good things about it and wish to try it for yourself. That's all I did. However, at the moment I did it the woman who is the contact for the croc diet was out of town for a while so she didn't get back to me for some time. However, she got back to me ASAP when she got back and within the first email she set me up with some. She sent it out on tuesday and I had it on my doorstep on wednesday.

I had changed my water in the gator's pool yesterday evening about an hour before feeding. After feeding as you probably read, the large biscuits make quite a bit of mess. Immediately after the alligators had their fill and were no longer interested in food, I then started the cleaning process. After I was done, the water was back to being VERY clean. This morning everything was pretty much the same.

I got home this evening from work and the water looks as if I hadn't changed it in two months! I am not sure whether the croc diet goes through them faster or what the deal is, but when it comes out it's obviously not very pretty. So if you use this diet, be sure to be willing to change the water next day, or I hope you have a VERY good filtration system.

Best Wishes,

Chris

Thanks Chris for taking the time. I accidently started using cichlid sticks a few years back (to feed a cohabitating red devil) but stopped when "senior members" of the board advised against it. I tried Burris pellets and found them way too oily, and unpalatable to boot.

I've been feeding for the most part whole rats, but am interested in the Mazuri - but not sure I want the filth associated with pellets in tight confinement (the stool from the cichlid sticks would clog the filter and pads very quickly and stink).
