Palm Springs moonlight cruise...

lateralis Sep 16, 2005 12:06 AM

DORs:
winder
helleri
undefineable colubrid
AORs:
numerous toads, hyla...
Krats galore
longnose
kingsnake
glossy snake
Full moon (no werewolves), slight wind from the east, temps in the mid 70's only gave it an hour and 15 minutes so it wasnt a total loss for that short a time. Done by 9pm, weather was still optimal for activity...

...want...us to beg for jpgs....I wanna see the helleri & I gotta-no...how close to the winders was it???? I just cant get over viridis n cerastes being sympatric...how far N & W do winders get in the high desert....Lancaster?
Id say once again...you prove that even when conditions are sub-optimal...the time 2 look is when you can...

Saw a big son whip & that was it for snakes this week...despite perfect AM conditions & lotsa field time....???? Did see Blackhawks & big velvety bucks tho

I'll get one or two popped up here soon, the winder and helleri were within 200 yards of each other, so there are basically 3 crote species being found on this road within sight of each other, interesting, for this area. Furthest west Ive seen winders is in the WW canyon area.

I am going back tomorrow during the day to check out the conditions and see whats going on in that area, I still cant get over the three of those guys, not to mention specks, using the same habitat but I guess they do. I'll be callin ya manana, we had a busy day and a bat mitvah to go to.

I've never seen cerastes in Lancaster. Got to go further east I think.

I've heard of helleri and cerastes in nearby habitats before, helleris are in the hills and cerastes in the nearby valleys, so they could come close. Most true after heavy rains like this year, helleris may travel further out of natural habitat due to growth.
