Need some advice

metis25 Sep 16, 2005 12:10 AM

I purchased a desert horned lizard a few months ago.Everything was going great until yesterday evening I fed and he/she did not want to eat.Same thing today.I tried a couple of very small crickets, one was eaten. Also a very small mealworm.Outside during the day but I do bring inside at night and kept where my other reptiles are.The only one in a 40 gallon tank.Set up is sand a couple of rocks and a branch.Outside is a larger setup.I am very worried.I squirt a few times a week.
Any help is appreciated.

Lori:

It sounds like this is a recent addition to your collection, and also like you are doing a lot of things correctly as far as set up goes. This leads me to believe that this animal is likely infected/infested with some type of internal parasite, be it bacterial, protozoal, or some type of worm. The best thing for you to do would be to quickly take the animal in to a veterinarian, who is familiar with reptiles, along with a stool sample if possible, so that he/she may check the sample for some type of parasite. The sooner the better (I would go tomorrow if possible). It sounds like this animal only stopped eating recently and may still be able to be rescued... Good luck!
