are troublesom feeders rare?

goregrind Sep 16, 2005 05:58 AM

because none of my snakes (besides the blizard who i got yesterday) have ever had a feeding problem, theyll eat live,ft, white, black, brown , strike at anything smelling like mouse.
yesterday i switched two of my snakes from live white mice to f/t brown/black mice and they didnt notice the difference, i used a glass of hot water to thaw them out and they didnt care about that either, but one didnt realize it was food so i pulled on its tail and he ate it.

i guess what im trying to say is, am i lucky or are most snakes good feeders?

Well if they are captive bred, then they are usually fine....At least in my experience. However, there can still be finicky ball pythons. Ball pythons are notoriously picky feeders, although I have never had a problem with any of mine.

i just feed f/t and have no problems. my corns and milk i got as babies so thats what i gave them when i purchased them, even though my milk was on live pinkies i think. at first he didn't know what it was. i just wiggle it a bit and he went for it. now all i have to do is set the meal in and he seeks it out and start eating. i will tease my amel corn a bit. he has a great feeding response so i give him a little bit of excitement thinking he is getting a live one.
i have never fed live to any of my snakes. my ghost corn will go off feed when its that time of year and he is relentless in crusing his cage for a mate. after a few weeks he is eating again.

i have a blizzard corn hatchling, i know its captive bred so what are the chances it will be hard to get it to eat an ft pinkie?

also after the shipping she went through some additional stress.
it arrived when i was at school, when i got home i looked in the cage and couldnt see it so i knew where it was (i have a small stump in its cage thats hollow and made of glass and the roots are perfect for a small snake to hide in) so i set it down on my bed and used the eraser of a pencil to "prod" her out (by prod i mean i touched her as far back into the root as i could making her think something was behind her and she came right out, i did not pull or try to force her, i gently had her come out on her own) and i took a few pictures, then i went out for a while and found out my sister went through the cage looking for it, she said she "tore the cage apart and couldnt find him", i showed her pictures but she didnt care she wanted too see her, i took out the stump and i was about to do the same thing and my sister shook it( now shes not going to be allowed to hold it when its older) and i took it out of the stump again once she saw it her interest was gone, which ticked me off more because she wouldnt leave me alone about it and i had to show her or shed pull it out herself. will that stress affect it negatively?

Making the switch from live prey to F/T prey can be tricky for some specimens. Generally, warming the item slightly, as you did and manipulating the prey item, as you did, thoughI prefer the use of forceps for such, will help.
Sounds as though you incurred a normal response regarding the species you are keeping, while others, such as Drymarchon, Aspidites and a couple of others mentioned can prove to be more difficult.
You may have to warm and manipulate the F/T prey items several times, before your snakes will accept them readily. You can always leave F/T prey items within the enclosure and allow them some time to figure out what has been offered, as such cannot harm your snake/s...

when i came home i saw that my sister went in the new snakes cage again and looked at the blizzard and show it to her friends, i was really mad and i started swearing at her right in front of her friends telling her in a way she will understand that she has to leave it alone, im normally nice to her but shes 11 and smart enough to know better, and i told her before so she alredy knew.

that the snake keep hiding in so you don't have the same problem when you want to get it out. that will stress it out just as much poking at it to get it out. paper towel rolls work great for corn babies. or any type of small box. i used a band aid box for a while.
i think it should take to f/t prey but i would wait till NO ONE has handled it for a couple days then try to feed it. good luck...again. :0)

Why don't you just lock your enclosures?

Gotta agree with AustHerps. If you're living with a 11 yr old disrespectful twit, it may pay to invest in or make some sturdy enclosures with locks. And keep real good track of the keys. I have my own king in a locked cage. People around my house are pretty good, but it only takes one dumba** or macho guest...
