Shut down by the IRS

bps516 Sep 16, 2005 12:29 PM

I wanted to see if anyone here would be able to answer this for me. A pet store down the street was shut down by the IRS (thank God! Really had animal care there). They locked up the store with everything in it. I wanted to see if anyone knew where they take it from there. I heard that the guy did break in and get his birds out but pretty much everything else was left in there. I was asked by a couple of neighbors what would happen to the animals from there and I have no idea. Any thoughts?

It is good that it was shut down, we complained through the proper channels, but are we ever heard was we will look into it. Also before it gets said, there is NO way I am thinking of getting any animals if they sell them or any other way!

Most likely they will go to the local humane society for evaluation/care/sale or adoption - not sure why the IRS would shut down a petstore - if back taxes are owed - possibly they will somehow arrange to sell off the animals and inventory to pay for the debt. But it's hard to tell.

'Proper channels' being a local SPCA or PETA? I think they'd also be a good source to find out what is a typical outcome for this type of scenarios. I'd shoot them a call or email to see what they say, perhaps they can use their resources to make sure everything ends up OK.

In other niche markets (a record store, for example), they might divvy up their stock to other local shops, presumably at some sort of discount. However, record can go for a long time without food and water.

Now you've got me curious, too! Please keep us updated as to what happens.

Funny you say that... I was in the Petco down the street and they had fish I have never seen in there before. A large Prown? Several saltwater and some River Catfish? That was the first thing that I thought when I saw them is that they came from his store. It would suprise me though if a big chain picked them up. I am going to check around, thanks to you both for your posts and for the info. I'll let you know what I find.
