Calcium and Shell

rhyn999 Jul 18, 2003 11:20 PM

i have 2 baby res about 2-3 inches long.

Do I need to provide calcium suppliment?

I have read the care sheet for tortoise

and reptoCal powders and cuttle bone are

often suggest.

I'm wondering if aquatic turtles need the

calcium too.

P.S. Their shells are normal now. But i just

want to make sure it stays that way.

thank you~

yes, all turtles need some sort of calcium/vitamin&mineral supplement. if not supplied their shells could go soft later on.

Calcium is important for growing shells. Be sure they are also getting adequate UVB rays (either from a UVB light or natural unfiltered--not through a window--sunlight, which will be turned into Vit D3 and which will allow the calcium to be absorbed.
