Megapixels! Megapixels!

Can anyone tell me how many megapixels on a digital camera would suffice for taking QUALITY pictures of my snakes and posting them on this site? -Life Is Learning- Sankofa

It's a matter of finance as much as anything else.
If I could have afforded, it at the time, I probably would have gone for something around 5 megapixels.
But I bought a low end Nikon CoolPix 31000 with 3.2 megapixels and have been pretty pleased with the results.
It is great for web sites and forum posting.

For taking a pic from a digital (3MP compared to a 5MP), not much difference for displaying that pic on a computer screen. I used to have a 1.3MP for a couple of years and in March of 2004 I bought a 5MP. THE DIFFERENCE for me is that now I can take that pic and do more things with that pic on Paint Shop Pro. I could NOT with a 1.3MP. The higher the MP, the less pixelation you will get when enlarging a pic. Also if you are interested in printing pics from your digital, the higher MP, the better quality printable pics.

Also important is the OPTICAL zoom, NOT the digital zoom. The higher Optical Zoom, the better. I have a Nikon that has 8x OPTICAL Zoom.

Then, what is even MORE IMPORTANT: is learning your camera and what it can do. By the time you figure THAT out, then a newer, better camera will be out for cheaper LOL

Just take LOTS of pics and experiment.

The amount of megapixels isn't too important, something around 3 mp is fine. What you really need is a good macro lens for closeup shots and a tripod. The tripod keeps the picture from bluring due to hand shake.

Most people need nothing more than 3mp for just having a camera to use. Megapixels come into play at with 1 thing and 1 thing only....enlarging the image. a 3mp and a 6mp in a 4x6 print or on a comp screen will appear no diff...now, a 3mp and a 6mp blown up to 8x10 or larger, or if you zoomed in on a specific portion of the project...NOW you'll see the difference.
