Monster Speck......Pics...

jlassiter Sep 16, 2005 07:00 PM

I luckily got a pair of these thanks to my good buddy Todd (antelope). They are from wild collected eggs in Calhoun Co.,TX.

They are certainly not monster in size, but surely think they are....LOL
Todd....does your pair think they can kill you like these do?

Cool little snakes.....

Thanks for looking,
John Lassiter

That one is AWESOME Joe.....
I would say it has more Holbrooki than Splendida in it.....Especially being from up in the San Antonio area.
Sweet looking specimen....

The getula from Calhoun Co. definitely are intergrades as well, but lean more toward Holbrooki.
I bred two other locales this year as well....Aransas Co.(south of Calhoun) and Nueces Co. (south of Aransas)....They all show some degree of intergration with a lesser degree being from Nueces to the south.

it surely has some speckled influence, but that pic is deceiving.... here's another shot of the same snake.

It definitely has influences from both.
I think the intergrade zone for these is huge and has no distinctive north / south line but more of a northwest / southeast line.
What do you think?

>>What do you think?

it's getula from NE Bexar county LOL

Here are pics of an Aransas and a Nueces hatchlings from W/C parents. There are subtle differences and I can see the one from Nueces Co. has more Splendida influence and the one from Aransas has more Holbrooki influence than the one from Nueces.
What do you think?
John Lassiter

Aransas Co. on top....Nueces Co. on bottom.

Joe Forks Sep 16, 2005 08:28 PM

yes... I agree with that...

Above I posted that your Splendida had "more" holbrooki in it, but what I meant is that it definitely has influences from both holbrooki and splendida.....
Also.....I would love to be able to find some Splendida and Calligaster up your way. I am only two hours away from San Antonio.
To be honest with you I have yet to even see a calligaster in the wild..dead or alive.
Again...cool snake Joe,

Well you and Todd can come help me look in October if you want.
25 years ago it was a cinch in Bexar county. But everyday that goes by it's increasingly more difficult due to urban sprawl.

The oldest calligaster record I could find in Bexar county oddly enough was from Somerset (SW Bexar county). While it's possible they are there still, I highly doubt it, and believe they are being forced further NE and E out of the county.

The Bexar county population indicated on range maps seems to be a finger extending into the county from the NE, and I've only ever found them in extreme NE Bexar county.

There are many places I just prefer not to go alone. There seem to be homeless camps at nearly every one of my field sites in the county, and the potential for conflict is not worth the risk alone. I much prefer the safety in numbers scenario.

Thanks Toby......
I thought Mexicana were hard to get feeding on pinks....Hell, my thayeri were a cinch this year...It is the Aransas Co. intergrades that are hard headed.....They rank up there with Alterna.....LOL
