My blood is by far my most boring snake....

hefte Sep 17, 2005 01:44 AM

She stays in the same spot ALL the time. She never moves, always in her hide. She did hide under her water bowl for a while, but now prefers the cooler side of the tank. She is getting pretty big, and eats well, sheds well, doesn't have any health problems but really doesn't move much. Even when being handled, for the first fifteen minutes she stays completely still in your hands. Then slowly moves around. Don't get me wrong I love bloods, the way they look, their temperment and everything else that goes with it but I had no idea they were so sluggish. Is it just mine, did I get a dud, or is this typical. I take her outside and she stays perfectly still for a half hour. Any comments would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Eric-

No worries-you didn't get a dud. That behavior is perfectly normal. Pythons and boas/boids are the laziest of the snakes. In fact, unless a snake is really hungry, upset or shedding it doesn't move alot. Of course colubrids may move a bit more than the pythons/boas, but for the most part snakes just "chill out." Also, I don't know if you pay much attention to your snake at night, but most are nocturnal(and even then sometimes they remain in repose). Occasionally I see my blood out at night, but for the most part he stays in ONE place for days. -Life Is Learning- Sankofa

I actually love that my snake will sit in my lap for an hour when she's out. I know she moves around because the woodchips are always moved into new piles, but I've only seen her actively cruising 3-4 times in the year I've had her.

I love the big chubby lump, and wouldn't want her any other way.

Yup, they're just big fat lazy snakes. I wouldn't call mine boring though, even though they don't do much in the cage, mine are far more interesting out of the cage than say a Ball python. Sometimes they'll just sit there in my lap, but usually they start moving around and crawling all over me. It's fun cause each one has it's own little quirks and sort of personality. Just my thoughts..... -chris-

All of my other snakes are active to some extent. My JCP is all over the place, my Mangrove is the king of the night, and my rat is out all day. I do understand that bloods are ambush predators and normally lay around but I didn't realize that they moved so little. Boring was probably not the right word, I do love her, I do like the fact that she sits in my lap as was previously mentioned, my other snakes keep you on your toes so it is kind of nice. Thanks for all the responses, thought that post might upset a few people so thanks for being kind, Eric-

Lazy as anything yet when you take them out they have lots of personality.
