RETF Amplexus?

killergeckos Sep 17, 2005 10:56 AM

A few weeks ago I purchased a group of wc red eyed tree frogs at a herp expo. They are doing awsome together. I don't know how to sex them because there is very little difference betweeen the three of them. One is fairly small (1.5 - 2 inches) the other two are fairly large (3 inches). I had assumed the two larger frogs were females, but I think I heard one of them chirp. DO FEMALES CHIRP? Also, just today I found the small one and one of the larger ones in amplexus. It seems a bit early for amplexus, but I have been feeding them heavily and keeping the humidity high. SHOULD I BE WAITING FOR EGGS?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Females don't chirp, as far as I'm aware.

You can get male on male amplexus.

I have two male RETF and they went through a stage of mounting each other, sometimes much to the discomfort of the other one, sometimes with little notice even paid.

They seemed to "grow out of it", and the opinion was ventured here that it might have been a dominance thing.

3 inches is quite big for a RETF though, so they could well be females. I'd say you were very lucky to get two without knowing it, if they are.
For breeding most people recommend a 3:1 ratio of males to females.
Since you've got a .5:1 ratio, if you're considering breeding you might want more males.

Normally, though, I think you need a rain chamber to persuade them to mate, unless your tank is set up very conveniently.
Mine chirp every night, but that's just the high humidity.
To actually mate I believe I'd need a rain chamber and a bigger area of standing water with leaves hanging over it.
( Right now i have leaves hanging over my waterfall, but it's too shallow )

Hope this helps
