Found a baby snapping turtle

Ryo Sep 17, 2005 11:39 AM

This morning I found a very small snapping turtle, it cant be more than one inch long, crawling across my street. I am in the middle of a residential area, and I have no idea where it could possibly have come from. What do you think I should do? Should I keep him, or try and release him into the wild as soon as I get a chance to go up to a place suitable for him to live? Until then, how should I keep him? What do I feed him? How big will he get? Sorry for all the questions. By the way I'm in Iowa, so winter is coming up....not sure how snapping turtles deal with that. Thanks ahead of time.

take him to a creek or large body of water asap. he needs to be out in order to acclimate to the winter as it comes. if you want to keep him and can provide him with the 150 gallon tank hes gonna need as an adult i can tell you what you need but it is better for him to be set free.

Thank you for the quick response. After you reassured me it would be ok in the winter, I put him in a lake a few minutes from my house.
