Vision tubs?

Jeannie Jul 19, 2003 12:32 AM

Can anyone tell me if the Vision tubs are safe to use outdoors without causing overheating? This would be for a hatchling Hermann's tort. I would be building an outdoor pen eventually, or sooner if need be, but was hoping I could house it in a tub I could use inside and out until I get the pen together. I also thought a hatchling might be safer in a smaller area until it gets a little bigger.

Thanks for any advice,

Jeannie

Vision tubs are great and made virtually indestructable. I keep the largest tubs for various turtles and tortoises.

The one thing you'll want to watch out for has little to do with what type of tub. If it is prone to rain in your area, you want to make sure either 1) the tub is covered or 2) the tub has drain holes drilled into it.

The vision tubs are white so less heat is held but as long as you provide a decent substrate and your tortoise has shelter in the tub from direct sunlight, you should do well. Some folks use Vision tubs as permanent housing.

When you set it up, do some temperature testing to feel safe but it's a not a bad idea.

I'm in California, so rain wouldn't be a problem during the time the tort would be outside--it would be too cold out once the rains came. I do plan on doing some temp. checks before I get the tort. Thanks for the feedback.

Good for you, on finding info before you got your torts.

I might use another type of tub if I can find one large enough. Iris does make large, sturdy boxes (I use them for my snakes), but they aren't opaque. They're not as see-through as glass, but they're definitely translucent. I know glass is not OK because they can see through it, but how good is their eyesight? Would a box/tub with obscured visibility work, or does it need to be completely opaque?

Thanks again to all who reply,

Jeannie
