Starving hatchling Cat snake

Nick_schembri Sep 17, 2005 04:05 PM

Hi,

I know that nobody here probably encountered these snakes before but maybe someone here might have some info on what I can do. The cat snake is a rather small slightly venemous mediterranean snake. I dont know how but I found a 6" hatchling in my 3rd floor apartment bedroom. It is very weak and has an extremely skinny tail. Being very small and thin, a pinkie was out of the question so I put a small mealworm in its mouth which it swallowed. It doesnt move much, even when I picked it up. They are supposed to be very feisty as a species, and yet I get nothing. Do you think its possible to nurse such a snake back to health?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, for this is an endangered snake, and I would love nothing better than to release it to the wild once it is healthy.

Thanks,
Nick

Well to me it looks like its pretty healthy, and does look like its large enough to eat a pinky, but if not i do think you can bring him back to a good state, just feed him properly and give him a nice home.

i don't know anything about that kind of snake but it doesnt' look in to bad a shape. i'm wondering if its sluggish becasue its cold? perhaps bring his temperature up and see if it becomes more active.
it sure is a neat little thing!

Do you live in the snake's range? I ask because of your comment regarding returning it to the wild. Nice lookin' animal. You might try a pinky head. Good luck. Duffy

Try cutting a pinky in half, or maybe just giving it a pinky's head, like the previous post said. I'm no expert, but that's what I would do. You might be surprised at what that snake can get its mouth around. Also, make sure it's hydrated.

I'm from Malta, a small island in the mediterranean. Its a local snake here, but I've never seen one before since they are very rare.
Today it looked great, its flicking its tongue and has become very active. It must have just been the starvation and dehydration that was weakening it. I have to keep an eye out because my parents have pest control at the apartment and its quite strong, insects dont survive longer than 2 minutes on the floor.

But now I took it home and its doing a lot better
