My trip to East Bay Vivarium this morning... (56k forget about it)

samsun Sep 18, 2005 01:22 AM

This morning I drove down to East Bay Vivarium to pick up a couple baby arguses. While I was there, I took a few pictures with my digital camera. I arrived early, so not all of their monitors were out-and-about yet. They had a peachie, but it never came out (sorry RB). I grew up in the midwest, but now that I'm living in CA, I can simply drive to EBV, which is great. I was quite impressed with their operation, and will buy from them again.

Entrance to EBV…

beccari…

macrei…

prasinus…

salvadorii…

sav (it doesn’t show in the pic well, but its head was massive)…

One of my new babies (three weeks old)…

Another baby (three weeks old)…

The komodo model they used to create CGI in that one movie…

One of the best shops I've ever done business with. A little pricey, but that's expected for a quality retail operation.
I was there a couple of weeks ago and they had baby blue trees, green trees, and yellow trees(not melinus), in the small tanks up front. The owners are good guys too, highly recommend them.

I was talking to one of the EBV guys about the blue trees, and he said that they've received eggs only once, so, in his own words, "we're not sure if we bred it once, or if we're breeders." In other words, they don't know if it was simply luck, or due to excellent husbandry. They're obviously hoping for more.

They really seemed to create more of an environment for their animals (when compared to most reptile shops). I watched as they carefully misted each tropical cage, and I noticed many notes to employees on the cages, such as "feed crickets twice per day" or "do not mist", etc. They seem to treat their tree monitors better than the others. I also overheard several conversations with customers, and the employees didn't simply try to make a sale--they almost seemed to interview the customer before proceeding on a transaction. They really care about the animal's welfare. Also, the place doesn't stink! I was amazed.

yea they are really grate people down there, im going to make the 1 1/2 hour drive from my house in a few weeks , my mom likes to take a trip down there every couple months . whats great about them is sometimes if they dont think you can andle what your going to buy they will just turn you away from that animal and try to fit one better suited to your experience level and capability of handling the animal

Ive been a customer of EBV since 1969 - it is a great place, and 'good people' who manage (Carlos and Sean) and own it (Owen and John).

The priority of EBV is the animals - so they do not want any animal that leaves this store to end up dead a week later, or brought back imaciated/DOA condition...its a admirable practice they do there.

As for 'pricey' - for anyone who does not live in Berkeley as I do, the local taxes, blah blah are higher than adjacent communities here = it pays for alot of things many other cities do not engage in.

Ok guys, pricey is an understatement. To give you an idea they sell dumerils boas for $450 each there. Thats why, when I saw the 56k give me a break title I thought they were talking about some rediculously priced animal. On the other hand they have good service, and are very clean and take good care of the animals.
