Quick question about the rescued boa...

bazmonkey Jul 19, 2003 02:29 AM

As you may have read, I rescued a 4' BCI a couple days ago, who checked out fine at the vet, which I'm going to keep.

Of course, it was all a surprise, and I wasn't prepared to instantly buy him an appropriate-sized enclosure; I'm actually scraping for food for the next week so I can cover the vet.

I'm going to build him a fine enclosure as soon as I can, which could be as early as a week, or as late as 3 weeks (from the 18th).

I first put him in one of my kingsnake tubs (3.5'x1.5'x5", and it does seem a little short, obviously. I have ten gallons, and I *could* put my ball python (a baby) in one of the tens or a tub, and use her 20L gal tank for the boa. My question is, for the next 1-3 weeks until I can build him what he needs, how should I arrange these two? I chose the tub at first for the area rather than a cramped 10 gal with height, but for his first weeks in a new home, I'd like to know which would cause him the less stress; where would he be most comfortable?

I don't want to make it look like I'm unprepared to keep this snake because of my money. This is a temporary thing; I go to college and rely heavily on financial aid, so the months just before school starts is very tight.

Thanks,
Baz

To reduce stress he doesn't need height, but he does need privacy, so I'd definitely suggest the tub. It's actually fine even as a longer-term solution. Don't anthropomorphize him; snakes are much more interested in privacy and security than in stretching out.

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't trying to anthropomorphize him, but I've read that small enclosures can stress a snake out, and I wasn't sure if a large-area but very short enclosure would be better or worse than a small-area, decent-height enclosure. He's in my closet right now quarantined from the others, and he would have gotten privacy either way.
