Well, for your babies you are basically limited to a 10 gallon or a sweater box both of which open from the top. When I build my custom cages they will have sliding glass fronts. The front opening is better for 2 reasons. 1. is that is is much more convenient with bigger cages because you can reach right in and move around in there much easier, and 2. because it is less stressfull for your snake as they can see exactly what you are doing and you are not coming down from above them (like predators would) so if/when possible I highly recomend the cage that opens from the front! I posted a picture of Hope's tank when I first set it up. it is slightly different but you get the basic setup idea.

several companies make smaller front opening cages for babies. One of my favorite cages is BARRS. They are pretty economical, yet very secure. Go to herpcages.com and check them out.

I like the front opening viv. My snake seems to have relaxed since I put him in his new viv from a 29 gallon aquarium. He seems to really like his den too. The new viv is 42 inches long by 27 inches high and 2 feet deep. The tunnel to the den opens outwards for my access, but closes so Motega can get to his den. The pic is just showing the wood blocks that give him traction. His den is 12 inches by 12 inches. It has a slate floor tile that sits on the concrete floor since the whole viv is in my basement. It is about 68 degrees in the den up to 85 degrees at the ledge on the main floor.

I love the den idea! do you exect him to hibernate? does he actually use the den?

that is the coolest thing!! now thats what im talking about
how many times do you go in to pick him up and he is still in the
tunnel between the den and the viv?
